*Starting this Thursday, Ms. Bain will have a new blog.  There have been issues with parents being unable to receive blog messages via email, so I am hoping that by creating a new blog this problem will be solved.  If you would like to receive blog messages through email, please sign-up on the new blog on Thursday.

Highlights

In Social Studies, we learned about Arctic Foxes.  We practiced using the “Knew/New” strategy.  Good readers recognize when they already know certain facts (e.g., Arctic Foxes are animals) and they also pay attention to new facts learned (e.g., Arctic Foxes hunt alone).

During math, we worked with ten sticks and ones to make numbers.  For example, 14 is 1 ten stick and 4 ones.

Tomorrow Mrs. Gibson will come back to work with us on peer coaching.  We are learning to help our classmates use their reading strategies to figure out unknown words, instead of telling them the word right away.

We are also starting Mission Impossible in gym on Tuesday.

Important Information

On Feb. 6 we will be making clay animals with Clay for Kids from 12:40-2:40 pm.  We are looking for 1 or 2 parent volunteers with security clearances to help with this activity.  If you are interested in helping, please email Ms. Bain at lcbain@cbe.ab.ca before Jan. 31.

Highlights
During Math, we started to work on word problems.  We talked about how we can use different strategies to solve problems, such as drawing pictures or using addition or subtraction.  We also talked about how it may be necessary to read a word problem multiple times to help us understand what the question is asking.

In Science we experimented with combining different liquids.  We discovered that some liquids mix (e.g., vinegar and water) while others do not (oil and water).

In Social Studies we are learning about Arctic animals because we will be making Arctic animals out of clay in February.

Ask Me About:

In Science today we talked about “surface tension.”  We observed that pepper can float on water due to water’s surface tension.  Then we added dish soap to the water, which changed the surface tension.  What happened to the pepper after we added the dish soap?  (The pepper sank to the bottom of the plastic cup.)

Highlights

Yesterday we had a special presentation from storyteller, Denise Miller.  More information about the presentation is on the Panorama Hills homepage.

Today we wrote words, which tell about us.  We will be learning how to type these words into a word document and how to change the size and font.  After we will print our words and put them in our creative journals.  We also painted a page in our creative journals today.
