Highlights
We talked about understanding ourselves as learners and thinking about how we learn best.  For example, some students prefer individual learning activities, while others like working with partners or groups.  Some students like to draw or write to show what they have learned, while others prefer to talk about their learning.

We started using a story organizer to plan ideas for our gingerbread stories.  We have been reading a number of different Gingerbread Man/Boy/Girl stories to help us with ideas and story structure.

We also continued working on our giraffe art.

Tomorrow is our Alex Assembly and School Spirit day.   Please wear your PHS T-shirts or hoodies.  If you don’t have a T-shirt or hoodies, please wear blue or gold (our school colours).
School council will be selling Spirit Wear again during Parent Teacher conferences.

In Social Studies, we started learning about maps.  Students love to find different places on the globe.

We read the story “Giraffes Can’t Dance” and made personal connections.  We also started an art project based on this story and we painted our backgrounds today.

Highlights

Strong readers have very active or busy brains.  We have been working on using our Reading Powers to help us understand fiction stories.  We are learning that great readers….
1.    Make connections between the books they read and their memories, experiences, knowledge, or other books.
2.    Ask questions (e.g., What is going to happen next?  I wonder why the character is sad?)
3.    Visualize (Make pictures or a movie in their head about what is happening in the story.)
4.    Infer (Be like a detective and use clues in the book.  Sometimes the author doesn’t tell us all the information and we have to pay attention to clues.)
5.    Thinking transforms (Sometimes what we think, or how we think, changes after we have read a story.)

We also had a “house” in our classroom for part of the afternoon.  Students in building club put it together with straws and connectors at lunch and we kept it up for part of the afternoon.  We enjoyed reading and listening to our novel (Lions at Lunchtime) while we were in the house!

*Farm to School fundraising order forms are due Thursday morning.  Since they are dealing with fresh vegetables, we are unable to accept late forms.

Highlights
On Tuesday we had our Scientists in School presentation about liquids.  Thank you to our parent volunteers!  Students were introduced to concepts such as reading a thermometer and identifying if something is a solid, liquid, or gas.  We also experimented by mixing different substances to see if they make a solution or a mixture.  We made many discoveries when experimenting with bubbles and trying to make plasticine float.

In Math, we are learning to recognize numbers that add to 10.  We call these “ten friends”.

Spelling
Ms. Bain’s group and Ms. Fleming’s group are reviewing words with short letter sounds.  Students in these groups will not have a quiz this week.  If you are in Ms. Bain’s group, students are to practice making, reading and spelling words on the sheet sent home.

Ms. Klingbeil’s group was sent home a list of spelling words.  Students in this group will have a quiz tomorrow.

Ask me about:
What two numbers are 10 friends?  (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5)

You have two containers:  One container only has ice and the other container has ice and salt.  Which one would melt faster?  When we used a thermometer to measure the temperature, which one was colder?

Highlights
In Math, we worked on addition doubles (1+1=2, 2+2=4, 3+3=6…. 9+9=18).  We talked about how pictures can help us remember our doubles.  For example, you can think of the number of legs on a spider to help you remember 4+4=8.  Or you can think of a dozen (12) eggs, which has 6 eggs on each side of the carton to remember 6+6=12.  Students were sent home doubles cards to practice.

Mrs. Goldenberg also came for character circle and talked to us about “Honour.”

Tomorrow morning is our liquids presentation from Scientists in School.
