Important Information

Ms. Klingbeil/Mrs. Kirkpatrick, Ms. Fleming and Ms. Bain’s classes will be doing a virtue assembly on Tuesday, Oct.11 at 8:30am.  We invite parents to join us if you are available.

Parents, please read the PHS Reading Handbook for Parents found on the Panorama Hills School homepage.

Homework
-Raz-Kids or daily reading
-100 charts were sent home for students to practice counting forward and backward by 2, 5 and 10.
-Spelling quiz tomorrow

We encourage students to practice the spelling pattern each evening. We also encourage students to hunt for the spelling pattern during their home reading. Below is a list of possible activities you can do at home to make this practice fun.

ABC Order: write your words in alphabetical order.

Creative Letters: Write your words by cutting out letters in old magazines and newspapers and glue them on a paper.
Sound Words: Use a recording device and record yourself spelling your words. Then listen carefully to make sure you spelled all the words correctly.
Flashwriting: In a darkened room, use a flashlight to draw letters in the air.
Timer: Get a timer. Set it for 3 minutes. See how many times you can write your words before the timer goes off.
Scramble: Have your parents scramble your spelling words. You unscramble them.
Trace Around: Print your spelling words neatly. Take a coloured pen and draw an outline neatly around the word, closely following the shape of the letters. Close your eyes and remember the shape.
Letters: Write each word as many times as there are letters in the word.
Colourful Words: Use two different colour pens to write your spelling words. Use on colour to write the consonants and the other for the vowels.
Computer Words: Type your spelling words ten times each on the computer. Use different colour fonts and sizes.
Snap and Spell: Snap on each letter and clap when you say the word at the end.
Action Spelling: Do jumping jacks, as you clap say a letter to spell your words.
Sentences: Write a sentence for each spelling word.
Finger Tracing: Use your fingers to spell out each of your words one letter at a time on your Mom or Dad’s back.  Have him/her guess the words.

A note about spelling:
The important aspect of spelling is whether students transfer their knowledge of these words into their writing.  We recommend frequent review of these words, so students do not just commit them into short-term memory for the quiz.  Modified lists may also go home with students who are finding these words quite difficult.

Ask me about:
-Magnets attract objects made out of… (iron, nickel, steel, and cobalt).
-Do you like the novel “Mummies in the Morning”?  Why or why not?
-What is our virtue assembly about?  (Thankfulness)

Spelling
Spelling lists sent home to practice.  Quiz on Friday.

This week we are looking at words with the short a sound.  We are also looking at how we can use spelling patterns to spell a number of different words.  For example, knowing how to spell “back” can help students spell other words like pack, quack, track, lack, Jack, etc.  Please see the following list for a variety of ways to practice at home:

Ask me about:
-Increasing patterns with monster math.  Students had to pick a rule for an increasing pattern and draw the number of eyes on different monsters.  For example, if the rule was “Start at 1. Add 2 more each time” the first monster had 1 eye, the 2nd had 3 eyes, the 3rd ha 5 eyes, etc.
-Can you skip count backwards by 5 from 100?  (100, 95, 90, 85, 80, etc.)
-How did you turn the end of your scissors into a temporary magnet?

Highlights

We had our individual pictures taken today!  Please note that class pictures are next week.  In math, we learned that an increasing pattern follows a rule and gets larger each time.  Skip counting by 2, 5, 10 are examples of increasing patterns.  At home, students can practice number patterns and counting using splat square.

I look forward to meeting with parents and guardians during our conferences tonight and tomorrow!

Highlights

This morning, Mrs. Goldenberg read us the story “The Most Magnificent Thing” and we talked about this month’s virtue, which is Diligence.  Tomorrow we will have our first visit to the library.  The school will provide each student with one extra-large Ziplock bag to safely store their library books.  Library books must be returned inside this bag.  We also started reading the second Magic Tree House book titled, “The Knight at Dawn.”  We are learning how to visualize and make pictures in our head while reading or listening to stories.
