Highlights
A sample of what we do each day:
Mornings
Literacy centres (students rotate through spelling practice,
writing, reading with Grade 3’s, guided reading with the teacher and learning
puzzles); morning message/poems; word work (spelling); recess/nutrition break;
math; teacher read aloud; free choice reading
Afternoons
Science/Social; gym (4 days in a 6 day cycle); music (2 times in
a 6 day cycle); health, art or technology
Homework:
Reading: Students should be reading 10-15 minutes each night (either the
paper books, Raz-kids books, their own books at home or library books if they
are at an appropriate level). It is very
beneficial for students to read a book multiple times to improve their reading
fluency.
Word Study
(spelling): Practice
spelling and writing one line of the words “be” “I” and “see.” There will be a review quiz on Friday. Please continue to review the words on the
spelling list sent home last month.
Important
Information
As part of the Senses unit in Science, we will be having a guest
speaker from the Canadian National
Institute for the Blind (CNIB). Please read the note sent home for more
information.
The CNIB has requested one
parent volunteer for each class. We
will do a random draw of parents who return the volunteer slip attached to the
letter.
It’s
getting colder!
Students will be outside every day (unless it is colder than -19
degrees Celcuis). Please make sure your
child dresses for the weather. It is an
expectation that grade 1 students are able to dress themselves (zip up their
jackets, put on their mittens and hat).
If your child has difficulty with these tasks please have them practice
at home.
Ask Me About:
What is my city called? Calgary
What is my province? Alberta
What is my country? Canada
(Lots of students would
benefit from more review of this!)
